Welcome to Boundless Moments
A storytelling podcast about moments of deep connection between people - those moments when time seems to stand still. Hosted by an internal medicine physician, Dr. Nathan Houchens, our podcast often features stories from healthcare but extends to any moments of shared humanity. In each episode, we delve into those brief moments that uncover the transformative power of compassion, the profound beauty of vulnerability, and the unyielding resilience of the human spirit. Boundless moments come to life through the voices of those who lived them. Through their heartfelt tales and the conversations that follow, discover how ordinary encounters become extraordinary.

Do You Know What I Mean?
Arlene MacDougall, MD, MSc, FRCPC
She began to talk about how she has a recurring vision of this very dark cloud with a little shining light in the center that grows. And as she was saying this to me, I was of course imagining my own dream. And she looks at me and says, do you know what I mean? And I said, yes, I do know what you mean.
Origami Elephants
She noticed a truck approaching this intersection with a stop sign in its path, but the truck didn't stop. So she slammed on the brakes at the intersection but knew it would be too late. They were going to crash. Except she said the road parted. It expanded. And her car went right around the truck which she said would have been impossible because there were ditches on both sides. There was no room to do that.
A Deep and Abiding Love
Adam Marks, MD, MPH
And a few days later he came out again and he said it happened again. She woke up and she found me crying and I used your words. I said, you know, honey, I'm a doctor and I'm so sorry that I can't get you better. I wish I could get you better. And she responded. She said, Dad, it's okay. I know that when I go to heaven that I'll see you again there. And he said, and then we had, then we cried together.
Taking Bricks Out of the Backpack
Heather Gilmartin, PhD, NP
I broke down, right? I cried and I became angry and all of these things that I had kept inside, bottled up, that I finally let go. And it was sacred because she didn't judge, she didn't correct, she didn't bring advice, she just was present. And she bore witness to my revelations. It changed everything.
Fijian Oldies
Andrew Kim, MD, MPhil
The embrace was short, it couldn't have been more than 5 or 10 seconds. We didn't exchange any words again, but there was within that embrace this implicit acknowledgement, this silent and deep knowing that the answer to that question, no, we were not too late.
Three Little Birds
Kristin Collier, MD
And I saw three little birds come down one by one in a beautiful arcing swoop. And one by one, each one of their wings just brushed the water as they did so. And it was so beautiful and magical that I sat up to see if anyone else had seen it. And everyone else was asleep on their chair. It was just me. And I knew in that moment that Jake was gone.
Fireflies
Kenneth Pargament, PhD
And then she said “I started to have this warm feeling. It was a warm feeling in the, in the center of my chest, and then it began to spread all over me, all over my body.” And then she said, “that feeling, that feeling, it spoke to me.” I was stunned by what she was saying, and I asked Alice, “what did the voice say?” And Alice said, “the voice told me ‘I'm with you. I'll always be with you.’” I asked Alice who was speaking, and she said, “oh, that was God. God was telling me he'd be with me no matter how bad things got.”
